The process to request this waiver is called the <strong>Unusual Circumstance Appeal<\/strong> <em>(previously called a Dependency Override)<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Examples of Qualifying Unusual Circumstances<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>An abusive family environment<\/li>\n<li>Parental abandonment or estrangement<\/li>\n<li>Incarceration or institutionalization of both parents<\/li>\n<li>Parents lacking physical or mental capacity<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This is not a complete list. If you believe you have unusual circumstances, contact a campus <a href=\"https:\/\/students.austincc.edu\/financial-aid\/contact-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Financial Aid Office<\/a> to discuss your eligibility.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Examples of Circumstances that Do <\/strong><strong>Not<\/strong><strong> Qualify as Unusual<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Parents do not support the student or refuse to contribute to the student&#8217;s education<\/li>\n<li>Parents are unwilling to provide information on the FAFSA or for verification<\/li>\n<li>Parents do not claim the student as a dependent for income tax purposes<\/li>\n<li>Student demonstrates total self-sufficiency<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If your Unusual Circumstance Request is denied, then you must either include your parent\u2019s information on the FAFSA or submit a Parent Refusal Form to request a Federal Unsubsidized Loan. Contact a <a href=\"https:\/\/students.austincc.edu\/financial-aid\/contact-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Financial Aid Office<\/a> to discuss your options.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How to Request an Unusual Circumstance Appeal<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Follow these steps:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Complete the <a href=\"https:\/\/students.austincc.edu\/financial-aid\/apply-for-financial-aid\/financial-aid-steps\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">financial aid application steps<\/a> for the current school year. You must have a FAFSA application on file (omitting your parent\u2019s information) before you can submit the Unusual Circumstance Appeal.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/students.austincc.edu\/financial-aid\/contact-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Contact the Financial Aid Office<\/a> to discuss your circumstances and eligibility. We are here to help in-person or online. Appointments are available but not required.<\/li>\n<li>Submit Unusual Circumstance forms on your <a href=\"https:\/\/austincc.verifymyfafsa.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">StudentForms portal<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Submit additional documentation online that supports your unusual circumstances. Additional documentation can include (but is not limited to):\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Court documents or police reports<\/li>\n<li>Hospitalization records<\/li>\n<li>References that can verify your unusual circumstances such as:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>School teacher, counselor, or principal<\/li>\n<li>Director or counselor of children\/youth home<\/li>\n<li>Pastor or clergy person<\/li>\n<li>Other persons who can accurately verify your unusual circumstances<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Processing Timeline<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s our goal to review student Requests and provide an approval or denial as soon as possible, usually within two weeks of receiving the student\u2019s completed Unusual Circumstance documents.
