With over 41 million Spanish speakers in the U.S. and nearly 8 million in Texas alone, the demand for language services is booming. Austin Community College District (ACC) Continuing Education Division recognizes this opportunity and invites students to join the 2024-25 Translation and Interpreting Program cohort.

About the Program

This program, now open for registration, equips students with the skills needed for careers in translation and interpreting. It offers a comprehensive curriculum with three specialized tracks: Translation, Community and Medical Interpreting, and Court Interpreting, all taught online over three semesters.

Students in the program also gain practical experience by volunteering as interpreters at various community events and clinics. These include the Texas School for the Blind, Sacred Heart Community Clinic, Foundation Communities Prosper Centers, and ACC’s Ascender to College Mini Majors Day.

Student Highlights

In the last academic year, 62 students successfully completed the program, earning Certificates of Completion in one or more tracks. Highlights included:

  • Immersive experiences with Western District of Texas U.S. District Courthouse in Austin, the Travis Country Criminal Courts, and Sacred Heart Community Clinic.
  • Guest lectures by industry experts including Marco Hanson, owner of Texan Translations, acclaimed literary translator Liliana Valenzuela, and Gustavo Negrete, Chair of the National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters (NBCMI).
