Austin Community College District’s (ACC) annual Juneteenth Celebration allowed community members to express resiliency, freedom, and community. The event took place on Wednesday, June 18, at ACC’s African American Cultural Center on the Eastview Campus.

The celebration brought together all walks of life to celebrate the deep roots of East Austin with performances and storytelling from ACC Professor Roland Hayes, esteemed East Austin resident Grandma Wisdom, and Dennis Jacob Berry, the fifth-generation grandson of Reverend Jacob Fontaine, for whom the plaza at ACC Highland Campus is named.

“Each moment from these pillars highlighted the resilience it took to cultivate and develop freedom so Black communities can thrive in the Austin and Greater Austin area, and all over the world,” said Darrell Merriweather, Student Affairs Area of Study Senior Advising Specialist. “The day brought about hope, joy, compassion, and courage that will educate, empower, and enrich each one of us to remember the past, uplift the present, and share lived experiences for a brighter future.”
