Students looking for flexible, hands-on training closer to home now have a new option. Austin Community College District (ACC) officially opened its Lockhart Center on Thursday, January 29, giving students a first look at a new downtown facility designed for in-demand skilled trades.

“Seeing this building filled is a powerful reminder of why access matters,” says ACC Chancellor Dr. Russell Lowery-Hart. “When education and workforce development are aligned at the community level, the entire region benefits. We are thrilled to be part of the Lockhart community.”

Located in the renovated historic Ford Building at 303 W. San Antonio Street, the 20,000-square-foot center now offers training for high-demand fields such as plumbing, HVAC, and other skilled trades tied directly to regional workforce needs.

During the open house, more than 300 community members toured classrooms and hands-on training spaces and learned about upcoming course options and career pathways available in Lockhart.

Since Lockhart ISD’s annexation into ACC last year, enrollment among Lockhart ISD residents quickly exceeded expectations. Today, more than 600 local students have enrolled, including high school learners, recent graduates, and adult learners upskilling for new careers. The new center in Downtown Lockhart expands programs even more.

“This (center) is much more than bricks and mortar. It’s a symbol of opportunity,” says Mark Estrada, Lockhart ISD Superintendent. “This community made this investment. Kids are going to drive by here, parents, family members, and they’re going think: ‘Maybe I should go back to school. I can do this.’ It’s much more than a physical space; it’s proof that Lockhart is investing in its people, and that ACC is investing in our community.”

Classes also are available at the Lockhart High School for students seeking core academic courses. Classes are open to all, with free tuition available to eligible high school graduates and GED® completers from the ACC service area.
