{"id":48076,"date":"2024-04-19T17:43:07","date_gmt":"2024-04-19T17:43:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/students.austincc.edu\/infohub\/?p=48076"},"modified":"2025-04-24T13:37:29","modified_gmt":"2025-04-24T18:37:29","slug":"accs-biotechnology-department-welcomes-aisd-students-for-dna-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/students.austincc.edu\/infohub\/2024\/04\/19\/accs-biotechnology-department-welcomes-aisd-students-for-dna-day\/","title":{"rendered":"ACC&#8217;s Biotechnology Department welcomes AISD students for DNA Day"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In a celebration of scientific inquiry and hands-on learning, Austin Community College District&#8217;s (ACC) Biotechnology Department is partnering with the college\u2019s Make It Center (MIC) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bio-rad.com\/en-us\/p\/edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BioRad<\/a> Laboratories to host DNA Day at ACC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>DNA Day serves as a reminder of groundbreaking discoveries and advancements in genetics while highlighting the importance of education and outreach in ensuring continued progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Date: <\/strong>Thursday, April 25<br><strong>Time: <\/strong>9:30-11 a.m.<br><strong>Location: <\/strong>ACC Highland Campus, Building 2000, Make It Center<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students from Akins and Crockett High School will not just be spectators but active participants in the world of biotechnology and genetics. The event is designed to be interactive, igniting curiosity and deepening understanding through hands-on experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students will explore the intersection of genetics and neurobiology in a special experiment called <em>Pavlov\u2019s Worms<\/em>. They\u2019ll examine and compare normal and mutant worm behavior and ultimately learn about the connection between worm genetics and human health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students will also extract DNA from their cheek cells using real-world laboratory procedures.
