The award highlights their leadership in securing more than $500,000 in research funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF), bringing rare hands-on research experiences to ACC students \u2014 something usually reserved for major universities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their work led to two NSF grants:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.austincc.edu\/newsroom\/2016\/05\/09\/acc-awarded-national-science-grant-to-develop-innovative-research-experience-course\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A $307,000 grant launched a summer research experience that allowed science majors to get into the field early in their academic careers<\/a>. The program included partnerships with the University of Texas at Austin and Texas A&amp;M.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.austincc.edu\/newsroom\/2022\/07\/11\/acc-students-look-at-flooding-impacts-for-citizens-science-program\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A second $201,000 grant brought citizen science opportunities to ACC students of all majors<\/a>, focused on Hurricane Harvey and its lasting impact on the Texas coastline.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The project, led by ACC faculty, was tailored for community college students \u2014 making it possible for students to participate in research without leaving their home campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The recognition came with a small cash prize, which they used to build a sense of community and belonging \u2014 covering food during long field days, supporting guest speakers, and attending conferences to improve their teaching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese simple gestures transformed routine learning environments into bonding moments,\u201d Gamage wrote in the NAGT newsletter. \u201cThey helped our students feel like they belonged.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Read the full write-up in the <a href=\"https:\/\/nagt.org\/nagt\/divisions\/2yc\/newsletter\/foundations_v.14_n.1.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NAGT March Newsletter<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Two ACC Geology adjunct faculty members \u2014 Kusali Gamage and Leslie Davis \u2014 are getting national recognition for the impact they\u2019ve made in the classroom and beyond.
