In our latest blog post, the College shares <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.austincc.edu\/student-support\/6-tips-for-parenting-students-to-succeed-in-college\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">six tips to set you up for success<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Tip 1: Tell Your Advisor You&#8217;re a Parenting Student<\/strong><br>Your <a href=\"https:\/\/students.austincc.edu\/advising\/\"><strong>assigned advisor<\/strong><\/a> can unlock support built for you, including <a href=\"https:\/\/admissions.austincc.edu\/registration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>pr<\/strong><\/a><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/admissions.austincc.edu\/registration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">iority registration<\/a> <\/strong>so you get first pick of the classes and times you need. If you&#8217;re pregnant, you&#8217;re <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ed.gov\/laws-and-policy\/civil-rights-laws\/sex-discrimination\/know-your-rights-pregnant-or-parenting-title-ix-protects-you-from-discrimination-at-school\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>protected under Title IX <\/strong><\/a>and may qualify for accommodations.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Tip 2: Apply for FAFSA or TASFA<\/strong><br>The <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/h\/apply-for-aid\/fafsa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FAFSA<\/a> <\/strong>\u2014 or the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.highered.texas.gov\/students-families\/tasfa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>TASFA<\/strong><\/a> for non-citizens with Texas residency &amp; nonresidents \u2014 is your first step toward <a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/understand-aid\/types\/grants\/pell\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Pell Grants<\/strong><\/a> and scholarships that don&#8217;t have to be repaid. <a href=\"https:\/\/students.austincc.edu\/financial-aid\/\"><strong>ACC\u2019s Financial Aid Office<\/strong><\/a> can walk you through it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Tip 3: Apply for the Childcare Scholarship Early<\/strong><br><a href=\"https:\/\/students.austincc.edu\/personal-resources\/child-care-for-college-students\/\"><strong>ACC&#8217;s childcare scholarship<\/strong><\/a> pays your daycare provider directly and can cover winter and spring breaks. Apply as soon as you register to get on the waitlist early.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Tip 4: Look for Other Money for College<\/strong><br>You may qualify for <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.austincc.edu\/paying-for-college\/acc-free-tuition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">free tuition<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/students.austincc.edu\/scholarships\/\">scholarships<\/a><\/strong>, and ACC\u2019s no-interest<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/admissions.austincc.edu\/payment-plans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">payment plans<\/a>.<\/strong> If an unexpected crisis hits mid-semester, the <a href=\"https:\/\/students.austincc.edu\/care-network-center\/advocacy-team\/\"><strong>Student Emergency Fund<\/strong><\/a> may be able to help \u2014 apply and meet with a CARE Coordinator to discuss your options. If you\u2019re a veteran, take advantage of all of your <a href=\"https:\/\/students.austincc.edu\/veterans-services\/benefit-hazelwood-forms\/\"><strong>federal and state benefits<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Tip 5: Build a Schedule That Works for You<\/strong><br>ACC offers many different <a href=\"https:\/\/www.austincc.edu\/college-your-way\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>class options to work with your schedule<\/strong><\/a> \u2014 online, in-person, hybrid, and asynchronous classes. Take them in 8-week, 12-week, 14-week, or traditional 16-week sessions. Work with your advisor to find a course load you can succeed with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Tip 6: Use Your Academic Resources<\/strong><br><a href=\"https:\/\/students.austincc.edu\/tutoring\/\"><strong>Sign up for tutoring<\/strong><\/a>, use the <a href=\"https:\/\/students.austincc.edu\/accelerator\/\"><strong>computer labs<\/strong><\/a>, and go to your professors&#8217; office hours. Asking for help is part of being a successful student.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ACC\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/students.austincc.edu\/care-network-center\/\"><strong>CARE Network<\/strong> <\/a>has other supports for you, too, including connection to public benefits like SNAP and WIC, <a href=\"https:\/\/students.austincc.edu\/mental-health-counseling\/\"><strong>mental health counseling<\/strong><\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/students.austincc.edu\/essential-resources\/riverbat-bites-food-pantry\/\"><strong>Riverbat Bites food pantry<\/strong><\/a>, which provides free food, diapers, wipes, and period products.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Going to college while raising kids is a lot to balance \u2013 but ACC has resources built to help you do both.
