The decisions you make today will impact your future ability to buy a car, buy a home and save for retirement.&nbsp; Taking time now to make a plan will put you in control of your money. It is based on the number of hours you spend in class each week. For example, you can expect to spend three hours in class each week for a three-credit course.<\/p>\n<p>A <strong>full-time student <\/strong>at ACC takes at least four classes per semester (12 or more credit hours). A <strong>part-time student<\/strong> is enrolled for fewer than 12 credit hours per semester.<\/p>\n<p>What classes will you take? How many credit hours are those classes? Find your own Award Plan by selecting your Area of Study here.<\/p>\n<p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/p>\n<p><div class=\"list\"><p class=\"trigger\"><a href=\"#\">Step two: What will your tuition and fees be?<\/a><\/p><div class=\"toggle_container\"><div class=\"block\"><\/p>\n<p>Find out if you\u2019re going to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.austincc.edu\/about-acc\/acc-district-and-service-area\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.austincc.edu\/about-acc\/acc-district-and-service-area\">pay in-district or out-of-district<\/a> tuition. Then, based on the number of credit hours you\u2019re going to take, <a href=\"https:\/\/admissions.austincc.edu\/tuition-table\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/admissions.austincc.edu\/tuition-table\/\">refer to this chart for your tuition and fees<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/p>\n<p><div class=\"list\"><p class=\"trigger\"><a href=\"#\">Step three: Create a semester-based budget.<\/a><\/p><div class=\"toggle_container\"><div class=\"block\"><\/p>\n<p>Use our <a href=\"https:\/\/students.austincc.edu\/money\/semester-budgeting\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/students.austincc.edu\/money\/semester-budgeting\/\">budgeting template to create your budget<\/a> for the entire semester.<\/p>\n<p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/p>\n<p><div class=\"list\"><p class=\"trigger\"><a href=\"#\">Step four: Reduce expenses and commit to living like a college student.<\/a><\/p><div class=\"toggle_container\"><div class=\"block\"><\/p>\n<p>Being a college student is temporary. Commit to living like one. Examine your expenses and see if there are any ways you can reduce your expenses. Be clear on what you need versus what you want. You may have to give up some of those wants for a bit, or at least cut way back.<\/p>\n<p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/p>\n<p><div class=\"list\"><p class=\"trigger\"><a href=\"#\">Step five: Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).<\/a><\/p><div class=\"toggle_container\"><div class=\"block\"><\/p>\n<p>Even if you think you don\u2019t qualify, <a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/h\/apply-for-aid\/fafsa\">complete the FAFSA<\/a>. It\u2019s free. The FAFSA screens your eligibility for need-based grants including the Federal Pell grant. Money you receive from grants you don\u2019t have to repay. Many scholarships will require that you\u2019ve at least completed the FAFSA before considering you for a scholarship.<\/p>\n<p>Need help completing the FAFSA? Tip: You should never pay to have someone complete your FAFSA.<\/p>\n<p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/p>\n<p><div class=\"list\"><p class=\"trigger\"><a href=\"#\">Step six: Apply for scholarships.<\/a><\/p><div class=\"toggle_container\"><div class=\"block\"><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/students.austincc.edu\/scholarships\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/students.austincc.edu\/scholarships\/\">ACC Foundation scholarships<\/a> are the best place for you to start. Free money! Yes, you\u2019ll have to write an essay. And yes, you can do it! It\u2019s worth your time\u2026it\u2019s free money you don\u2019t have to pay back! The scholarship deadline is April 1 for scholarships awarded in the fall semester and October 1 for scholarships awarded in the spring semester. Contact the College Hub Program at Foundation Communities.<\/p>\n<p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/p>\n<p><div class=\"list\"><p class=\"trigger\"><a href=\"#\">Step seven: Consider student loans to cover the gaps.<\/a><\/p><div class=\"toggle_container\"><div class=\"block\"><\/p>\n<p>Only after you\u2019ve reduced your expenses, committed to applying for scholarships, and know exactly what your gap is, consider Federal student loans. To receive a Federal student loan, you have to complete the FAFSA (see step five). You may be offered more than what you need\u2026accept only what you need. It will help you calculate your costs now and see your future student loan payments if you take out student loans.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Student Loans<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/understand-aid\/types\/loans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Federal student loans for college<\/a>, by Federal Student Aid<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.consumerfinance.gov\/paying-for-college\/choose-a-student-loan\/#o1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Choosing a loan that&#8217;s right for you<\/a>, by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>College Scorecard&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The U.S. Department of Education&#8217;s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/collegescorecard.ed.gov\/\">College Scorecard<\/a>&nbsp;ensures families have the most up-to-date, comprehensive, and reliable information available on colleges, all in an easy-to-understand format.
