While the core structure of the faculty profile will remain familiar, this updated version introduces several enhancements designed to improve the user experience for students, faculty, and staff.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What\u2019s new for faculty in Version 5:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>SAS Websites have been updated to provide detailed information on how to use new features in AIM.<\/li>\n<li>Faculty AIM information<\/li>\n<li>Faculty SAS Testing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>NEW! Summer 2026 Pilot: FLEX PLAN<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the updates in AIMv5, there is a new module that is being piloted to support students who are approved for flexible deadlines and attendance. Currently, attendance and deadline flexibility is discussed through email or in-person. The new module will provide resources and a questionnaire to support implementation of the accommodation in courses.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Currently, we are running a small cohort of students and faculty with a district-wide launch scheduled for a future semester.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Student Spotlight!<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Suha Kavakli is current SAS student who earned her GED at ACC, completed TSI Prep courses and the ESOL program, and is now taking college credit pre-requisite courses to pursue a health sciences degree. Suha\u2019s success is the result of her own relentless determination, with the support of a wide range of ACC partners (Adult Education, ESOL, tutoring and SAS, among others). She was recently celebrated for her drive and tenacity as a featured student speaker during this May\u2019s National Adult Educaiton Honor Society (NAEHS) Ceremony held at ACC\u2019s Eastview Campus (l<a href=\"https:\/\/austincc.hosted.panopto.com\/Panopto\/Pages\/Viewer.aspx?id=0b186b7b-747e-4b83-9225-b44a011d02ed\">isten to her share her inspiring story, and words of wisdom, starting at minute 17<\/a>). Suha\u2019s story was also featured on NPR\u2019s Marketplace podcast &#8211;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketplace.org\/story\/2026\/05\/11\/why-affordability-struggles-are-boosting-adult-education-programs\"> you can read the article here<\/a>, or start listening for Suha\u2019s story about 15 minutes in.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In April 2026, our very own ACC student, Mark Olaiz, led an engaging presentation entitled Disability Pride as Resistance. He taught us about the changing models of disability, relevant laws, and how to advocate for yourself and others. More about Mark in his own words:<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI am on a mission to show the world that \u2018unique abilities\u2019 are not barriers\u2014they are powerful perspectives that make our communities stronger. My journey began in Granbury, Texas, a small town where resources for someone living with Cerebral Palsy and visual impairment were almost non-existent. I learned early on that when the system isn&#8217;t built for you, you have to be the one to unlock the door.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I moved to Austin because I refused to let a lack of resources define my potential. Since then, I have dedicated my career to breaking glass ceilings and creating paths for others. From serving as the first visually impaired front desk worker at the Greater Austin YMCA to my extensive work in the Texas education system\u2014supporting students from preschool through high school\u2014I have seen firsthand where our systems succeed and where they fall short.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most recently, I have taken my advocacy to a larger stage, appearing on Austin\u2019s local news for \u2018Medicare Mondays\u2019 to speak on healthcare accessibility and policy. Currently, I am advancing my studies in Vocational Rehabilitation to further my goal of educating schools, employers, and public spaces on the necessity of universal design. I don\u2019t just advocate for a single diagnosis; I advocate for a world where every individual, regardless of their disability, has the tools, the access, and the community support to live independently and build the life they want.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Find him on tiktok: blindeducatedmartinez and instagram: daredevil_blind_2.0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Sign Language Interpreting &amp; Captioning:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To ensure timely and equitable communication access for students and prospective students, please follow the process below when requesting an American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter-<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>For planned interactions (3+ business days\u2019 notice):<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Please submit a request using the SLIC (Sign Language Interpreting and Captioning) form:<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-student-accessibility-services wp-block-embed-student-accessibility-services\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"XOlzQUziAp\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/students.austincc.edu\/student-accessibility-services\/interpreter-request-form\/\">Sign Language Interpreting &amp; Captioning (SLIC) Request Form<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"iframe-container\">\n<div class=\"iframe-container\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"embed-responsive-item\"   class=\"embed-responsive-item\"   class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;Sign Language Interpreting &amp; Captioning (SLIC) Request Form&#8221; &#8212; Student Accessibility Services\" src=\"https:\/\/students.austincc.edu\/student-accessibility-services\/interpreter-request-form\/embed\/#?secret=LmGxA3mGjN#?secret=XOlzQUziAp\" data-secret=\"XOlzQUziAp\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Providing advance notice helps us secure appropriate interpreting services and ensures a smooth experience for both staff and students.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>For immediate or walk-in support:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If a student requires an interpreter on short notice, please use Google Chat:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Search for: <strong>\u201cASL Interpreter Needed\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Send a message with the request details in real time<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>You do not need to be a member of the chat to send a request this way!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Captioning-<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For captioning requests, please use the handy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.austincc.edu\/captionrequest\">Media Captioning Request Form<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>To Request Captioning:<\/strong><br \/>All audio\/video material used by\/within ACC should be captioned, whether used for classes, events, staff\/faculty training, marketing, or anything else.<br \/>Examples include:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A pre-recorded lecture<\/li>\n<li>A video on YouTube relating to the topic of a class<\/li>\n<li>A video included with the electronic version of an assigned textbook<\/li>\n<li>A PowerPoint presentation with voice-over narration<\/li>\n<li>A recording of an online class session<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Adding accurate captions ensures ACC fulfills our legal obligations and lives up to our credo that ACC is for everyone. Besides providing equal access for our Deaf and Hard of Hearing students and employees, captions are frequently utilized by hearing viewers to aid in comprehension.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Automatic captions, as provided by platforms such as Panopto, YouTube, and Zoom are not good enough! Captions should be at least 99% accurate to ensure full compliance, and automatic captions are rarely capable of reaching this standard.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Submit requests to our Captioning department using the <strong>online request form<\/strong> at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.austincc.edu\/captionrequest\"><strong>https:\/\/www.austincc.edu\/captionrequest<\/strong><\/a>. <strong>This service is provided at no cost to ACC faculty\/staff and their departments.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>SAS Testing:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1aUIKxy7DU8JZgirKnZGXz9-W5n0_IgIutZqeYdOBBxk\/edit?usp=sharing\">Getting Started: Faculty AIM Testing Guide<\/a><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Review student\u2019s Faculty Notification Letter<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Discuss with students if they will be testing outside the classroom (Testing Center or SAS Virtual Proctoring).&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Submit an Alternative Testing Agreement Form<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>For detailed AIM instructions, including how to complete testing agreements, copy forms, or submit exams, please visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/students.austincc.edu\/student-accessibility-services\/testing-accommodations\/\">Faculty- Using the Alternative Testing Module in AIM<\/a> on the SAS Testing website.<\/li>\n<li>Complete the <a href=\"https:\/\/hunter.accessiblelearning.com\/AustinCC\/instructor\/\">Alternative Testing Agreement Form<\/a> in AIM. Exams will be administered according to the instructions in that form.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Submit Exam Dates<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Exam Dates allow professors to create individual entries per exam.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>To ensure students have sufficient time to submit their accommodation requests, we recommend entering all exam dates at the start of the semester.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Please note that the system only allows one exam deadline per day.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Accommodations in Blackboard Ultra<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Please use the Accommodations Feature in Blackboard Ultra to set up Extended Time. <a href=\"https:\/\/help.blackboard.com\/Learn\/Instructor\/Ultra\/Grade\/Grading_Tasks\/Accommodations\">Click here for instructions. <\/a>\u200b\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Once an FNL is received, <\/strong><strong>all exams for the semester need to include extended testing time.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>For accommodations that are incompatible with Respondus, assessments can be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canva.com\/design\/DAGswe5REgk\/LWDgo8w45Q84Zk7yk3lqeQ\/view?utm_content=DAGswe5REgk&amp;utm_campaign=designshare&amp;utm_medium=link2&amp;utm_source=uniquelinks&amp;utlId=hb3a3ff00ee\">duplicated in Blackboard Ultra<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you have any questions about the AIM testing module, please contact sastest@austincc.edu.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Adult and Continuing Education:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Our SAS team has two Accessibility Advocates dedicated to working with Adult Education and Continuing Education students across the ACC district.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Emily Perhamus and McKenzie Van Cleave support students needing accommodations or other disability-related support to participate in any Adult Education or Continuing Education course. These meetings are especially important for students who are blind or have low vision because they help shift the accommodation process from reactive to proactive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Access Planning Meetings bring faculty, Student Accessibility Services, and Alt Text &amp; Media specialists together to identify potential barriers before the semester becomes overwhelming for the student. Because accommodations for blind and low-vision students are highly individualized, these meetings help faculty understand the student\u2019s specific tools, formats, and access needs rather than relying on assumptions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Early planning supports ADA and Section 504 compliance, reduces last-minute accessibility issues, and helps ensure students have timely, meaningful access to the same learning opportunities as their classmates.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thank you for your partnership in supporting equal access for students in your courses&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Assistive Technology Spotlight: Genio Notes (Formerly Glean):<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Genio<\/strong> is an advanced, all-in-one digital note-taking and audio learning platform designed to support students who face barriers with traditional note-taking during lectures. By recording live or online classes, the software automatically syncs the audio with lecture slides and student notes, providing live captioning to ensure comprehensive content capture. It features built-in AI capabilities that transform these recordings into structured summaries, outlines, and custom study aids like flashcards and practice quizzes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Additionally, the platform features a new tool called <strong>Genio Present<\/strong>, a guided presentation-rehearsal tool launched in January 2026 that helps students reduce presentation anxiety and build oral communication skills. It provides a safe, private space to rehearse with video, audio, and slide recording while offering structured goals, optional timers, and self-reflection tools like confidence tracking and filler-word detection. With optional AI insights for actionable feedback and the ability to share recordings with tutors or peers, Genio Present builds long-term communication skills and supports students with learning differences who thrive in a low-pressure rehearsal environment. For a deeper overview of how this technology integrates into the classroom environment and benefits pedagogy, staff members can explore the dedicated<a href=\"https:\/\/genio.co\/faculty\"> Genio Faculty Page<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because our institution fully sponsors premium licenses for students who require this software as an academic accommodation, eligible students can access Genio completely free of charge. While the standard <a href=\"https:\/\/genio.co\/pricing\/get-genio-free\">Get Genio Free<\/a> page outlines general eligibility and trial options, students approved for this accommodation do not need to register for a commercial trial; Student Accessibility Services (SAS) will provide them with a dedicated institutional access link to set up their fully funded premium account. If you believe a student in your course could benefit from these note-taking accommodations but is not yet registered, please submit this <a href=\"https:\/\/cm.maxient.com\/reportingform.php?AustinCC&amp;layout_id=111\">Referral form<\/a>.
