More than 70 students joined ACC Chancellor Dr. Russell Lowery-Hart for the Virtual Student Town Hall on Friday, June 7.
The Chancellor opened the discussion by answering questions directly from students about their difficulties and to hear their ideas on ACC can do to better serve and support them.
Below are some key concerns that were discussed along with answers, including links for support resources.
Campus Safety & Security
Students shared questions about safety and security on campus. Dr. Lowery-Hart assured them that ACC has a strong safety process and is developing plans to improve training. This issue was part of a recent internal audit that reviewed the college’s, as highlighted in the first audit report from an external firm on the college’s Operations, Safety, and Security divisions.
Support Inside and Outside the Classroom
Students with children also asked where to go for more support. Dr. Lowery-Hart discussed multiple resources available for child care and meeting their basic needs. Find those resources below.
- Child Care
- Student Emergency Aid
- Financial Aid
- Academic Support
- Transportation
- Food
- Student Advocacy Center
Free Tuition Pilot Program and Current Student Support
Another question was asked about the Free Tuition Pilot Program and support for adult learners. Dr. Lowery-Hart explained that the college’s goal is to expand the program to all students but is starting with a select cohort to track the data. This will help better form the program and allow the college to work with partners to develop enough financial resources to expand the program. The Chancellor told students that one of the program’s goals is to free up scholarships and other financial support to better help current students.
Internship and Job Opportunities
Finally, students asked for more information about work and internship opportunities. The college offers several opportunities for students, including course-based internships and academic cooperatives supported by faculty in partnership with an internal department. ACC also has the ACC Grow career development program for students interested in working on campus. Students looking for additional opportunities are encouraged to connect with Career Services.
Future Town Halls
The Chancellor announced plans to continue offering Virtual Student Town Halls to connect with students to understand their needs better.
