If you’re planning to use financial aid next year, some important changes are coming to federal and state financial aid programs for the 2026-27 academic year.
Several federal and state policy changes will take effect beginning July 1, 2026. Below is a list of what’s changing to help you plan and avoid surprises.
Key Changes for 2026-27
- Federal Student Loans: Loan amounts will now be tied more closely to your enrollment level. Students taking fewer than 12 credit hours may qualify for reduced loan amounts. Additionally, your enrollment level will be reviewed each time a loan is disbursed and will take into account your enrollment throughout the year, including summer. If you receive a loan and later drop below the enrollment level to calculate your eligibility, the amount you already received will not change. However, your future loan disbursements during the same academic year may be reduced.
- TASFA Updates: Texas updated residency requirements for students applying for state financial aid through TASFA (Texas Application for State Financial Aid). To qualify, students must live in Texas for one year and establish a domicile in Texas before enrollment, and must be either a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
- Pell Grants: Most ACC students are not expected to be impacted, but students with a Student Aid Index (SAI) of $14,790 or higher will no longer qualify for a Pell Grant. Students can find their SAI on their FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) confirmation. Additionally, students who receive enough non-federal grant and scholarship aid to cover their full Cost of Attendance (COA) will no longer be eligible for a Federal Pell Grant, even if they would otherwise qualify based on financial need.
- Loan Repayment Programs: Federal repayment options are changing for current and future borrowers. Federal Student Aid is currently in the process of updating its loan page with the new repayment options. In the meantime, details can be found on their updates page.
The ACC Financial Aid Office is reviewing these changes and will continue sharing guidance and resources to help students navigate the updates.
