Why should I nominate my student to be an SI Leader?
Student success: Supplemental Instruction is an excellent resource to boost your students’ performance in your course. By having an SI Leader in your course, your students are better able to build community in the classroom, enhance their academic skills, as well as develop a better understanding of the course material. On average, students who attend SI Sessions achieve a letter grade higher in the course than their non-SI attending peers.
Course success: Incorporating SI into your teaching approach not only enhances student success but also contributes to a supportive learning environment with no extra work from you. Because SI Leaders are already familiar with the course, work closely with their professors, and attend lectures, they have a better understanding of the course logistics as well as lesson content. This understanding means that SI Leaders are able to assist students throughout the semester, making the semester feel less hectic overall, for both students and faculty.
Free resource: SI is not only an excellent resource, it is a free resource! The Supplemental Instruction progam is a part of Embedded Learning Services at ACC, funded through the Student Affairs department. With the logistics of SI managed separately from you, you and your students can focus on what is really important–their learning.
Don’t just take it from us! See what your fellow ACC Faculty have to say about SI:
Having a student who excelled in the course and having them in the classroom helps build confidence for the current students. It gives students an additional perspective.

What qualities should I look for when choosing a nominee?
Academic strengths: Identifying a good SI Leader starts with their academic performance. As facilitators of study sessions, SI Leaders must be able to understand the material well enough to guide other students through their learning process. Academic performance is about more than just course knowledge however. Does the student attend most, if not all, lectures? Does the student pay attention during class? Do they take notes? Do they ask questions? Are they submitting their work on time?
Leaders: Beyond seeing a student perform well academically, notice who has the qualities of a leader. Are they approachable to their peers? Are they charismatic? Do they converse with their classmates? Do they hold study sessions?
Collaborators: A crucial aspect of nominating an SI Leader is identifying a student with whom you want to work. Because you will be working closely with this student over the course of the next semester, it is important to nominate someone that is a good collaborator. Are they communicative? Do they have an interest in your discipline?

Faculty FAQs
Is an SI Leader like a TA (teaching assistant)?
No, SI Leaders are not trained as course instructors, nor are they qualified to assist in grading coursework. SI Leaders are trained and managed by the Supplemental Instruction department to market, host, and facilitate study sessions for the course they support. While they are experienced as students who have taken the course, they are not (nor are they expected to be) experts of the course material.
Do I need an SI Leader for each section of the courses I am teaching?
If you are working with multiple sections of the same course (e.g. 3 sections of MATH-1314), then you will only need 1 SI Leader. The assigned SI Leader will attend lectures for just one of the sections, but will be added to the Blackboard site for every section, and will support all students across all sections of the course.
If you are teaching different classes (e.g. one section of MATH-1314 and one of MATH-2412), then the SI would sit in on both classes as they are different courses.
Can I nominate an international student to be an SI Leader?
Yes, you can nominate any student who meets the requirements. For international students, make sure the student has (or obtains) a social security number as a prerequisit for their employment. We recommend reaching out to the International Student Office as soon as possible to ensure your student is eligible.
Can I nominate a student who took my course X number of semesters ago?
Yes, you can nominate any student who you’ve worked with before. Make sure the student you are nominating meets the requirements listed on the Become an SI Leader page.
Does my nominee need to be a current student at ACC?
Although we prefer to hire SI Leaders that are current ACC students, many students take breaks from coursework or even transfer to 4 year institutions. If your nominee is not currently enrolled, but has taken your course at ACC recently, then we will accept the nomination and reach out to the student.
I won't be teaching this semester, will my SI Leader lose their position?
In the event that an SI Leader loses their faculty member for any reason, the SI Team attempts to pair them with another faculty member teaching a course that works with their experience and schedule. While we try our best to ensure consistent employment, there is no guarantee. We recommend reaching out to colleagues of your department on the SI Leader’s behalf to help assign them with another faculty member.
