Become an SI Leader

What are SI Leaders?

SI Leaders are high-performing students nominated by their professor to support a course by facilitating collaborative study sessions in the SI model. SI-trained facilitation promotes student collaboration as the means for high quality learning of the course material. SI Leaders do not re-lecture, tutor, nor provide answers during sessions; rather, they encourage students to engage with each other and course resources to better develop their knowledge of the course material.

Professors and SI Leaders collaborate to create exclusive study content for sessions to guide students through the course. Alongside facilitating weekly SI Sessions, SI Leaders attend lectures and take notes on the course content so that they are fully integrated with their assigned course.

What are the duties and responsibilities of an SI Leader?

SI Leaders are expected to complete the following on a weekly basis:

Attend class lectures: Show up to class on time, pay attention to lectures and take notes, and generally act as a model student for your peers.

SI Sessions: Host and facilitate 2-3 SI Sessions (up to 3 hours per week), scheduled according to what works best for the SI Leader and students of the course.

Marketing: Consistently promote SI Sessions to students throughout the semester to encourage attendance (i.e. send emails, create and distribute flyers, in-class announcments).

Administrative tasks: Create session plans, complete session logs, communicate with the SI Team, and submit timesheets regularly throughout the semester.

What are the benefits of being an SI Leader?

Develop Leadership Skills

As facilitators of a dynamic and inclusive educational environment, SI Leaders develop important public speaking, team-building, and interpersonal skills.

Enhance Course Knowledge

As SI Leaders re-take the course and get reacquainted with the course material, they gain greater knowledge in their course subject. This is particularly beneficial for SI Leaders supporting a course that aligns with their future career.

Career Boost

Gain excellent professional relationships and experiences for your resume, as well as your future career! Because they work closely with educational professionals at ACC, SI Leaders often build relationships that can support future growth through recommendation letters, job referrals, and more.

Build Community

Connect with students, faculty, and staff across the ACC District. Because SI Leaders work closely with their students throughout the semester, they can help their students succeed in their courses and beyond!

Get Paid

SI Leaders at ACC are compensated with the district’s base hourly rate of $23/hr. Although the number of weekly hours varies by course type, an SI Leader works an average minimum of 7 hours per class per week.

Check out what our amazing SI Leaders have to say about their experience with SI at ACC:

It was a super fun experience with less stress than tutoring – not only did I get to relearn important concepts but I also gained confidence in my organic background and public speaking.

– SI Leader for Organic Chemistry II, SP25

It has been really gratifying to see students test scores improve drastically, and for those students to build relationships with one another. We’re at a point where everything is fluid, and as long as I have material prepared (feel now my admin hour accounts for all the time I spend planning) we’re ready to rock and I can take a backseat. My students have made me feel really confident in the work I do to help– and although SI is NOT about teaching, it has inspired me to pursue that path.

– SI Leader for US History II, SP25

I love that this was a professional teaching and leadership experience that was available to me as a student. This is so helpful in boosting my resume and gaining valuable interpersonal and group facilitation skills, as well as supporting my own learning and knowledge retention for valuable information I need for my nursing program. This experience has allowed me to kill several birds with one stone! I’m so grateful to be a part of it.

How many unique courses can I support as an SI Leader?

New SI Leaders can support one course per semester. Returning SI Leaders can support up to two unique courses per semester. “Unique courses” refers to course sections that are distinct from each other (e.g. PHIL-2306, MATH-1414). If an SI Leader is supporting multiple sections of the same course with the same professor and in the same modality (e.g. 2 sections of DIL PHIL-2306), this counts as one unique course.

*These values are estimates. The actual amount of weekly allocated hours may vary. SI Leaders are encouraged to contact the Supplemental Instruction team for the exact hours allotted for each course.

I've never attended an SI Session before--can I still become an SI Leader?

Yes! SI Leaders go through online and in-person training prior to the start of the semester, so they are well prepared, even if they’ve never been to a session before.
