Frequently Asked Questions

The following frequently asked questions cover topics that new ACC students and their families have when visiting the ACC Highland Welcome Center.

What’s the difference between credit and non-credit programs?

Credit programs earn college credit, which lead to a degree, diploma, or academic certification. If desired, these credits can then be transferred to other colleges or universities. Credit programs are typically eligible for financial aid. For more information about Associate or Bachelors (credit programs) check here: Academic & Career Programs

Non-Credit Programs are typically focused on skills development, vocational training, or personal enrichment, but do not earn college credits. They are often shorter in duration, more flexible in terms of scheduling, and may not have the same admissions requirements as credit programs. They are generally designed for individuals looking to acquire specific skills, improve job prospects, or pursue personal interests. The choice between credit and non-credit programs depends on your educational and career goals. Credit programs are suited for those seeking traditional academic degrees, while non-credit programs are ideal for skill-building and personal development. You should check ACC’s specific offerings and policies for more detailed information. For more information about Continuing Education (non-credit programs) check here: Fast Track Discounted Programs.

What is my tuition bill going to be?

Tuition is charged on a per-credit basis. Your residency status determines your tuition rate and some fees. See the Residency Classifications section of this catalog for more information. The Austin Community College Board of Trustees approves tuition and fee rates. Amounts are subject to change without notice. Refer to the Tuition Table for any updates to tuition and fees.

What is the difference between English as a Second Language (ESL) and English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) classes?

Adult Education ESL classes provide basic English language skills for non-native speakers. This program is free, class sizes are limited, and students must join a waitlist. The current waitlist is about six to eight months. For more information, click here: Adult Education ESL

Continuing Education ESOL classes are suitable for non-native English speakers who already have a basic understanding of English. Prospective students may take ESOL as a credited or non-credited option. Credited ESOL classes allow students to learn English in order to prepare for a degree program or transfer to another university while earning college credit. Non-credited ESOL classes are best if the student is only interested in learning English and not interested in any further college classes. Prospective students must complete the oral interview and ESOL Assessment Test before registering for classes. There is no waitlist, and tuition costs vary. For more information, click here: Continuing Education ESOL or email [email protected].

Does ACC offer mental health counseling?

ACC provides mental health counseling for current students. Students get 8 free sessions with one of our mental health counselors. You can find more information about how to get help here: Mental Health Counseling.
