Going to college while raising kids is a lot to balance – but ACC has resources built to help you do both. In our latest blog post, the College shares six tips to set you up for success.

Tip 1: Tell Your Advisor You’re a Parenting Student
Your assigned advisor can unlock support built for you, including priority registration so you get first pick of the classes and times you need. If you’re pregnant, you’re protected under Title IX and may qualify for accommodations.

Tip 2: Apply for FAFSA or TASFA
The FAFSA — or the TASFA for non-citizens with Texas residency & nonresidents — is your first step toward Pell Grants and scholarships that don’t have to be repaid. ACC’s Financial Aid Office can walk you through it.

Tip 3: Apply for the Childcare Scholarship Early
ACC’s childcare scholarship pays your daycare provider directly and can cover winter and spring breaks. Apply as soon as you register to get on the waitlist early.

Tip 4: Look for Other Money for College
You may qualify for free tuition, scholarships, and ACC’s no-interest payment plans. If an unexpected crisis hits mid-semester, the Student Emergency Fund may be able to help — apply and meet with a CARE Coordinator to discuss your options. If you’re a veteran, take advantage of all of your federal and state benefits.

Tip 5: Build a Schedule That Works for You
ACC offers many different class options to work with your schedule — online, in-person, hybrid, and asynchronous classes. Take them in 8-week, 12-week, 14-week, or traditional 16-week sessions. Work with your advisor to find a course load you can succeed with.

Tip 6: Use Your Academic Resources
Sign up for tutoring, use the computer labs, and go to your professors’ office hours. Asking for help is part of being a successful student.

ACC’s CARE Network has other supports for you, too, including connection to public benefits like SNAP and WIC, mental health counseling, and the Riverbat Bites food pantry, which provides free food, diapers, wipes, and period products.
