Austin Community College District (ACC) is upgrading account security by rolling out Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) to all students in fall 2026.
Starting September 28, students will be required to use MFA when they sign in to any ACC system. This means you’ll log in using your password and then use another verification method to confirm your identity.
How MFA Works
When you log in to your ACC platforms, you will enter your standard password and then complete a quick second check — such as approving a push notification or entering a short code from an authenticator app on your phone. MFA will be required for most online services such as Blackboard, ACCmail, and other services that require you to sign in with your ACC EID and password.
What You Need to Do
The new MFA system for students will launch on September 28, 2026. Here’s what you can expect:
Before Launch: Opt In Early | You can choose to opt in early for MFA by setting up an MFA security measure sooner.
During Launch: Set Up MFA | The first time you log in to an ACC application starting September 28, you’ll be prompted to add an MFA security measure. You will need to register at least one device with the MFA service you choose. Watch this video for set-up support and then find the option you prefer. Options include:

- Time-based One-Time Password (TOTP) Authenticators, including Google Authenticator or Microsoft Authenticator.
- Built-in Device Security (Biometrics), such as Touch ID, Face ID, or Windows Hello.
After Launch: Log In Securely | Use your phone or device to approve login attempts when accessing student portals.

Most digital break-ins happen because of stolen passwords, usually from phishing attacks. ACC is implementing MFA for students to help increase cyber protection. The MFA will help block unauthorized logins by requiring a second verification step — meaning even if a hacker gets your password, they still cannot access your account.
Multi-Factor Authentication is an extra layer of defense to help protect things such as:
- Your Personal Data: Financial aid records, personal banking information, class schedules, and grades.
- Campus Resources: Reduced risk of financial aid fraud and safer access to your student email, registration portals, and online learning platforms.
Can I use SMS for my MFA security measure?
No. After the formal launch on September 28, SMS will not be an option for students. Any students who is using SMS as an option currently will need to select a new method starting September 28.
What do I do if I don’t have a consistent device to use for MFA?

Will ACC employees also use MFA?
Yes. At ACC, multi-factor authentication is already mandatory for faculty and staff. Starting the week of September 28, 2026, it will also be required for students.
